Paediatric Malignancy Unit

The Paediatric Malignancy Unit is a fully CPA accredited unit located in the Camelia Botnar Laboratories at Great Ormond Street Hospital. We provide a wide range of both cytogenetic and molecular genetic tests.

The unit comprises two sections:

Paediatric Malignancy Cytogenetics Unit (PMCU)

Paediatric Malignancy Core Facility (PMCF)

The PMCU provides a specialist haematology and oncology service for patients at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) as well as for external hospitals. We work closely with staff from the haematology, oncology and histopathology departments in  GOSH.

The PMCF was established in 2008. We provide molecular genetic and cytogenetic diagnostic tests to a number of GOSH departments, other NHS trusts in the UK and the private sector. We have established a national service for several rare disorders.

We provide personalised research services to academic institutions and the private sector.

We are involved in R&D and clinical trials in the pharmaceutical industry.

We also participate in national and international collaborative research projects.

Our team comprises:

  • Laboratory Director (Consultant Clinical Cytogeneticist)
  • PMCF Section Head (Principal Molecular Geneticist)
  • Principal Clinical Cytogeneticst
  • Chief Biomedical scientist
  • 3 Clinical Cytogeneticists
  • 2 Genetic Technologists.

All members of staff are HPC registered; with genetic technologists on the voluntary HPC register. We are also a registered genetic technologist training laboratory.
